Biomining Bioremediation Of Old Dump Waste

Eco Pro is pioneer in providing consultancy and support for biomining of old dump site. India first's biomining project under our consultancy was executed at Shirdi Upwan Ghaziabad in the year 2010. The prestigious Biomining project at Indore which has created a wave in Biomining of old waste India was completed by us in 2018. The Project has been appreciated by Central Pollution Control Board and National Green Tribunal. Many cities have been asked to follow the Indore model. We have provided consultancy and support for biomining to following cities.

  • Indore municipal Corporation - 15.00 lakh cum.
  • Udaipur Municipal Corporation - 3.00 lakh cum.
  • Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation - 2.00 lakh cum.
  • SADA Mormugao Municipal Council GOA - 80000 cum.
  • Ujjain Municipal Corporation - 1.00 lakh cum.

We have been part of the guideline formation for disposal of legacy waste issued by CPCB on February 2019. (Refer page 4 of guidelines). Bio-mining/Bioremediation is an environment friendly technique to separate soil and recyclables (Like Plastic, Metal, Paper, Cloth and other solid materials) from legacy Waste. Solids Waste Management Rules 2016 says “investigate and analyse all old open dumpsites and existing operational dumpsites for their potential of biomining and bio-remediation and wheresoever feasible, take necessary actions to bio-mine or bio-remediate the sites.” SWM rules 2016 directed urban local bodies to clear legacy Waste dumps as well as existing operational dumpsite down to ground level by bioremediation and biomining process. This has also major requirements of Star Ranking of Garbage Free Cities protocol issued by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.

Process of Biomining/Bioremediation

  • Bioremediation treatment is done by dividing the site into suitable blocks.
  • Quantity of the waste to be Bioremedized is determined on basis of contouring of area to be treated.
  • Usually the top layer is dusty and may have several materials in the active biological state. This layer is to be stabilized through herbal/biological sanitizers.
  • Raking of garbage layer through long spike harrow operating in cross directions is to be done regularly to pull out rags, plastic, rubber, textiles etc.
  • Coarsely material and garbage screened through rotary/horizontal screens. The recovered earth spread in the area allotted by IMC. No extra charge paid to the contractor for lead or lift of the material.
  • The stone, bricks, ceramics which are removed while screening and raking sent for land filing or covering of waste of filling up of low lying area.
  • The recyclables like plastic glass metal rugs cloth recovered from the waste bundled by the contractor and sent to Material Recovery Facility if recyclable or Cement plant if not recycleable.
  • The site for Bioremediation clearly ear marked and space for storage of recyclable and reusable materials which will be recovered from bioremediation process.

Execution of work of Biomining/Bioremediation at Indore

As per the survey conducted by our company in the year 2016 approximately 15 lakh MT old waste was dumped at Devguradiya. It was decided by IMC to execute biomining/bioremediation work in phases. 50,000 cum of old waste was bio mined in first phase in the year 2016-17 as a pilot project and a green belt is developed on the bio mined area. In the second phase it was recommended to bioamine 50,000 cum waste during year 2017-18 through due tendering process. A contractor was appointed who brought his own machines to execute the project.

Indiscriminately dumped, unplanned heaps of uncovered wastes are pools of leachate, rat and fly infestations. The human beings suffer from multiple effects of unsanitary garbage dumping site such as: Respiratory problems and allergic response caused by bio-aerosol, vomiting, Eye burning, skin infection-dermatitis, and various forms of dysentery and diarrhea. TO address the unsecured landfill needs to be addressed. Indore Municipal Corporation called for online bidding process and handed the Project Site and on an as-is-where-is basis, free from encumbrances, for the Biomining/bioremediation operations to the successful contractor. All equipment and machinery required for the project was arranged by the contractor at its own cost. The work was completed successfully with help of two trommel and associated machineries. The work was done on per cum basis.

Bio-mining is a very simple scientific technique used in clearing landfills. Scientifically, garbage collected should pass through Material Recovery Facility and the rejects should be disposed to Secured Landfill. But in India, most of the ULBs have no such facilities, and are directly dumping the garbage on unsecured landfill till now. In second phase between January 2018 to August 2018, again 1,00,000 cum waste was bio mined by the contractor company.

Looking into the success of the biomining process IMC took a target to execute the biomining of the complete waste in fast pace. Through the experience gained by the earlier work done at Devguradiya landfill site, it was decided to deploy 15-20 times more machinery and resources and complete the bioremediation of legacy waste by December 2018. Since huge number of machineries was required it was decided to take the machines like trommels, screens, excavators, back hoe loaders on rent with operators and deploy all other manpower on its own. IMC deployed 10 Trommels, 15 Horizontal Screens, more than 50 excavators, backhoe loaders with 200 plus workers to execute the work. Daily monitoring of the progress of work was done by our team headed by Commissioner Indore Municipal Corporation.

The work was taken up on war footing and complete the bioremediation of legacy waste of approximately 15,00,000 cum was completed on 5th December 2018. The recyclables recovered from the biomining process was sent for recycling, recyclable polythene was sent to cement plants and for road making. The soil recovered was used for refilling the ground on the same site where granary is being developed. The recovered construction and demolition waste were recovered and sent to C&D processing facility to produce building materials. The left over about 155 of the waste was sent to secured landfill.

The garbage is bio degradable and non-bio-degradable and got accumulated over the years at the dumping yard without being segregated posed a huge challenge. Bio-mining and reclamation is a process whereby solid wastes which have previously been dumped are excavated and processed. With bio-mining technology, there will be no need to burn garbage in the open as it can be processed. The function of bio-mining is to reduce the amount of dump. In the process, mining recovers valuable recyclable materials, a combustible fraction, soil, land space. We Eco Pro Environmental Services, at Indore we have demonstrated a successful project of Biomining and Bioremediation which on directions of NGT and CPCB is being replicated at many other cities.

The treatment & disposal of Legacy MSW can be done by Bioremediation and Bio-mining. We perform total station survey mapping landfill/dumping done prior to start of the project. We also ensure precursor study with history of the site, compositional analysis of waste. Site environment parameters such as baseline study of heavy metals in surface and subsurface soils and water, rainfall, soil type, surface hydrology, topography, wind direction etc. The SWM Rules 2016 clearly mandate clearing of sites as a first option, by bio-mining and bioremediation. Bioremediation and bio-mining of MSW projects may not be economically viable but are mandatory to improve waste management ecosystems across India. Besides, land cleared by way of bio-mining and bioremediation of legacy waste, huge land area is evacuated, which can compensate the cost of its treatment. We provide complete solution for bio-mining and bioremediation of legacy waste.
